What ails Indian Healthcare today? There is no short answer, but the main fault line lies in the serious inequities that riddle the system. There is no consistency in the availability, price and quality of healthcare across regions, income levels and the urban - rural divide. Savita Memorial Trust’s flagship programme, Health Equity, is attempting to redress this imbalance, to bridge this vital gap, with a model of integrated healthcare thoughtfully constructed to bring healthcare to the Last Citizen in our villages.
Savita Memorial Trust was set up in 1974 by the late Dr.HM Patel, India’s former Finance and Home Minister, in memory of his wife, Savitaben. Though it has carried out some minor activities in the past, Health Equity is its first major initiative, initiated in 2023. The project is located in Sojitra because Savitaben was born and brought up there and, even though it lies a mere 25 kms from Anand, India’s milk city, Sojitra suffers from a significant deficit of healthcare infrastructure and services.
What drives Health Equity’s model is the belief that professional healthcare is a right that all citizens deserve, those in the villages no less than their urban counterparts. Health Equity’s solution is to train and place competent manpower at the primary and secondary care level, and to support these trained individuals with infrastructure, systems and processes in a self-sustaining manner.
The primary care component of Health Equity deals with preparing healthcare workers, called Arogya Mitras (Friends in Health) - ideally 12th standard graduates with a background and interest in healthcare, identified with the help of local institutions such as the Gram Panchayat and the Dairy Society. These individuals are trained via a specially-designed, skills-based curriculum in first aid, nursing, palliation, physiotherapy, drawing blood for lab samples and dispensing basic medication using the kit and supplies made available by the project. Arogya Mitras are provided with a mobile app and are their work is supervised by hospital’s medical professionals and project staff.

Health Equity’s secondary care component is served by a 50-bed hospital in a Tier 4 town – Sojitra - that is able to provide all services other than super speciality and invasive intensive care, which one day could also become an Academic Centre.

As a venture that is rooted in developing an alternative model of bringing healthcare to the Last Citizen in our villages, one that has only recently started its work, securing funds to sustain not only its operations but to also provide a cushion for its further expansion is critical. With the funds already secured, Health Equity has made significant strides, but these need to be sustained. You can help us make this happen.
